Seeing each city as a whole, this book seeks to understand the roles played by gardens in cultural development and social life. At the outset it focuses primarily. on private and princely gardens from Roman antiquity to approximately 1850. The book further probes into the successes and failures of park and public garden planning at city scale in Stockholm, Tokyo, Kerala (India) historic Suzhou (China) and in the US New Towns of the 1960s.
