Friction generally produces warmth, but this was not the case in Poznan, a city linking ethnic Germans to the west and ethnic Poles to the east. Alvis (church history, St. Meinrad School of Theology) examines Poznan from 1792 to 1848 to find how these differing ethnicities, and especially the differing faiths associated with each, were fundamental causes in the groups' forming differing national identities tinged with the symbols and concerns of religion. Alvis draws on a wide variety of primary data as traces the events particular to Poznan as its opposing forces rose and developed in a rapid time of social and economic tension, a situation that caught fire along with much of the rest of western, central and eastern Europe in 1848.
