Designed for undergraduate and graduate students, this collection of edited classic and contemporary readings highlights the interrelationships of race, class, and gender in discussion of the roots of poverty and inequality and possible solutions. Readings are presented in nine sections on areas such as the purposes and social structure of inequality, and globalization and inequality. Some topics include the new upper class and how they got there, the making of the underclass, and family background and income in adulthood 1961-1999. This second edition contains a new section of nine essays on solutions, looking at topics such as economic stimulus, early childhood education, and taxes and redistribution. This edition contains over 20 new readings, reflecting the rise of a multidisciplinary inequality field and draws more heavily on quasi-experimental, ethnographic, and mixed-method studies. Grusky directs the Center for the Study of Poverty and Inequality at Stanford University. Szelenyi, author of Equality by Design, has taught at several universities. 作者簡介
David B. Grusky is professor of sociology and director of the Center for the Study of Poverty and Inequality at Stanford University. His books include Social Stratification: Class, Race, and Gender in Sociological Perspective; Mobility and Inequality: Frontiers of Research in Sociology and Economics; and Poverty and Inequality.
Szonja Szelenyi has taught at Stanford University, The University of Wisconsin, and Cornell University. She is the author of Equality by Design.
