Sweetenham, an independent scholar in Oxford, UK, has produced an impressive volume, which will be useful to medievalists not only for the compelling translation into English of Robert the Monk's history, but also for its extensive introductory material in which the author discusses Robert as a historian; the history of his text; his role as theologian, historiographer and storyteller; and the relationship of his history to others of the same events. The translation is annotated with details of date and location. The appendix contains a translation of two letters calling Christians on Crusade, found in some versions of Robert's history. Dr Carol Sweetenham is an associate fellow in the Department of French Studies, University of Warwick, UK. Her previous book, written with Linda Patterson, was The Canso d'Antioca: An Occitan Epic Chronicle of the First Crusade (Ashgate 2003), and together with Susan Edgington she is working on a translation of the Chanson d'Antioche for the Ashgate Crusade Texts in Translation series.
