Philipsen (social foundations of education, Virginia Commonwealth U.) reports findings from a study of 46 female faculty members exploring how they juggle the demands of their academic and personal lives. The interviewees include white-Caucasian, African American and immigrant scholars, ranging in age from their 20s to 70s, and employed at five diverse higher education institutions in a mid-Atlantic state. Organized by career stage, from early-career women, to mid-career, to women at the end of their careers, the chapters examine the women's relationships between their personal and professional lives in general, challenges they face, conditions that enable them, and how they feel they compare to male colleagues and to different generations. Also included are recommendations for change on a systemic level and advice for coping on a daily basis. For professors, university administrators, and policy makers.
