Pop Art Portraits is the first publication to explore the role and significance of portraiture within Pop Art. Conceived as a visual dialogue between American and British Pop, it brings together key works by major Pop artists working on both sides of the Atlantic in the 1950s and 1960s. The book examines the shared preoccupation of these artists with depicting the famous, using images taken from popular culture - advertising, pop music, the cinema, magazines and newspapers. And it shows how Pop Art shattered the conventions of portraiture, creating a new genre of fantasy portraits. Pop Art elevated portraiture to a new, pre-eminent position. Blurring the boundaries between 'high' and 'low' culture, it focused on the individual, creating an art with genuine popular appeal.
Curator and author Paul Moorhouse explores Pop Art's complex and enormously creative engagement with portraiture from the early 1950s to its heyday and maturity in the 1960s. He shows how British and American Pop were closely linked, and also how they differed in terms of context, character and their treatment of imagery. The focus on Marilyn Monroe by artists such as Andy Warhol, Richard Hamilton, Richard Smith, Pauline Boty, Allan D'Arcangelo, Robert Indiana and Claes Oldenburg underscores one of the book's principal themes: the way in which Pop Art portraits transformed familiar images to create works of art of technical virtuosity, striking originality and enduring fascination.

作者簡介
Paul Moorhouse is Twentieth-Century Curator at the National Portrait Gallery, London. His books include Richard Long: Walking the Line and John Virtue: London Paintings. Dominic Sandbrook is a freelance historian and Fellow of the Rothermere American Institute, Oxford University. He is the author of Never Had It So Good: A History of Britain from Suez to the Beatles and Eugene McCarthy and the Rise and Fall of Postwar American Liberalism.
