In the late 1950s, Southern segregationists were against statehood for Alaska because it would open the door to statehood for Hawaii and create four more senators willing to vote against the filibusters that were stalling civil rights legislation. In this work, Cole, director of the University of Alaska-Fairbanks Office of Public History, chronicles Alaska's struggle to join the US and analyzes the role of Alaskan statehood in the fight for and against civil rights legislation during the era, focusing on the role of C.W. Snedden, owner and publisher of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, and his protege, a young attorney named Ted Stevens, as they used the newspaper to educate Congress and the American public about the need for Alaskan statehood. The book is illustrated with b&w and color newspaper photos, headline pages, and magazine covers, b&w historical photos of the press operations, and b&w advertisements from the newspaper.
