Toiles de Jouy - literally `cloth from Jouy' - refers to the distinctive cottons printed at Jouy-en-Josas that became highly fashionable in France during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. This book introduces readers to both toiles de Jouy and those toiles from other French manufactories, explaining their history, design and manufacture, and the decorative role these textiles played in contemporary wardrobes and interiors.
Charting the rise and fall of toiles, Sarah Grant explains how the introduction of Indian chintzes to France in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries launched the craze for these new printed cottons. Manufactories were later established in France and talented designers produced patterns for toiles in a host of different styles - floral, literary, neoclassical, allegorical, bucolic, exotic and commemorative---with many destined to grace the homes and wardrobes of the French aristocracy.
This book presents, for the first time in full colour, the Victoria and Albert Museum's world-class collection of French printed cottons. Glorious new photography highlights the designs that lend these textiles their particular charm and continue to ensure their popularity today.

作者簡介
Sarah Grant is an Assistant Curator of Prints at the V&A and a former Assistant Curator in Furniture, Textiles and Fashion. She has curated a number of displays, including Modern Masters: Matisse, Picasso, Dali & Warhol and Fashion Fantasies with Catherine Flood. She previously worked for Christie's in the European Furniture and Decorative Objects Department.
