相傳伏羲氏之女溺於洛水，被封為神，為洛水之神。據說三國時代，曹植有一天在河岸邊休息，忽然看到附近有一位超脫凡俗的絕世美女，心有所感，於是回家後就寫一篇洛神賦，敘述與洛神之間的愛情故事(錢，1996)。所以洛神葵的含意就是指非常漂亮的植物。洛神葵屬錦葵科(Malvaceae)，學名為Hibscus sabdariffa L.，別名洛濟葵、羅濟葵、紅葵、山茄及玫瑰茄等，俗稱洛神花。
