The first presidential proclamation honoringfathers was issued in 1966 by President Lyndon Johnson.
Independence Day is July 4. This federal holiday honors the nation's birthday-the adoption ofthe Declaration of Independence on July 4 1776. It is a day of picnics and parades, a night ofconcerts and fireworks. The flying of the American flag is widespread.
