Several types of front-suspension system designs must beconsidered.These are long and short arm,single control arm,moonbeam,and twin I-beam.All these suspension systems are used bymanufacturers and may be found on front-wheel.drive,rear-wheel.drive,or four-wheel-drive vehicles.
A variety of rear-suspension system designs are being used forboth driving and nondriving rear axles.They include both rigid axlesuspension and independent suspension types.
The driving axle types must provide the means for transmittingboth driving and braking torque.The nondriving rear suspension mustprovide the means for braking torque only.All rear-suspension systemsmust provide ride quality and vehicle stability.
When you think of an auto's suspension you probably first thinkof shock absorbers.It is nice that the name actually explains whatthese parts do.Without shock absorbers the continuing jounce(compression)and rebound(extension)of the spring are uncontrolled.This would be hard on the steering and suspension system,as well asprovide a rough and unstable riding vehicle.The shock absorbersreduce the number and severity of these spring oscillations.Faultyshock absorbers Can cause spring breakage.
shock absorbers are mounted between the flame and thesuspension by means of brackets and rubber bushings.The mostcommon type of shock absorber is the direct acting,telescopichydraulic,double-acting type.This type of shock absorber is used withall types of suspension systems.
The shock absorber operates on the principle of forcing fluidthrough restricted openings on both jounce(compression)and rebound(extension).
