The choice of transportation modes plays an important part in logistics rationalization. To make a sensible choice, it is necessary to know about the economic andservice characteristics of each mode.
Motor carriers are the most flexible mode of the five and no other mode canprovide the market coverage offered by motor carriers. They can use a widerange of network of roads and can transport products of varying sizes and weights overany distance. In general, motor carriage offers the customer fast, reliableservice with little damage or loss in transit . Motor carriers give much faster servicethan railroads and compare favorably with air carriers on short hauls .Loss and damage ratios for motor carriers are substantially lower than for railand are slightly higher than for air freight.
Railroads, like air, water and pipeline transport, provide terminal-to-terminal service . Rail transport generally costs less than air and motor carriage. Formany shipments, rail does not compare favorably with other modes on loss and damage ratios.It has disadvantages compared to motor carriers in terms of transit time andfrequency of service. However, some of this disadvantage may be overcome throughcombined transport , which offersthe economy of rail movement linkedwith the flexibility of trucking.
