George invited Dobbin to come to the gardens with Amelia,Becky, Joseph, and himself. He came to dinner and met George'sfriends. He was a tall, thin, clumsy man, who, like George, wasan army officer. They all talked about the war with France, andJoseph drank a lot of wine. He was trying to get enough courageto ask Becky the important question later that evening. Wouldhe do it? Everybody thought he would.
When they arrived at the gardens, George and Amelia wentoff together and so did Joseph and Becky. Dobbin was left tocarry the shawls and follow the others.
Becky told Joseph that she would love to see India.
"Would you?" he asked.
He was about to ask a more important question, but theywere interrupted by George and Amelia who told them it wastime to have some supper. They forgot all about Dobbin. Duringsupper, Joseph drank more and more wine. He began to talk andlaugh loudly. Everybody could hear him. He decided to sing asong. People shouted at him, and George was about to fight oneof them when Dobbin arrived and told the people to go away.
"Dobbin," said George, "look after Joseph while I take theladies to their carriage."
Dobbin stayed with Joseph as George took the two girls tothe carriage. Joseph began to cry and told Dobbin about his lovefor Becky and that he had broken her heart. As Becky rode in thecarriage, she was sure that Joseph would ask her the next day.
The next morning, Joseph did not feel well, and George teasedhim about the trouble he had made in the gardens. George wassecretly trying to stop his future brother-in-law from marrying agirl with no money. His plan worked. Joseph was so ashamed ofhis behavior that he did not come to the house that day. He wrotea note to Amelia.
"Please tell your friend that I am sorry. I am going to Scotlandfor a few months."
Everybody knew that Joseph would never have enough courageto ask Becky to marry him. It was the end, and poor Becky hadto leave. Mr. Sedley gave her some money, and Amelia cried. Then they called a carriage to take her to her new position as agoverness for the children of Sir Pitt Crawley.
Sir Pitt Crawley was a baronet and a Member of Parliament.lie owned a large country estate called Queen's Crawley, as wellas a house in London. He had many important relatives, includinghis brother, the Reverend Bute Crawley. His first wife was thedaughter of Lord Binkie. They had two sons, Pitt and Rawdon. Many years after his wife died, Sir Pitt Crawley married againand had two daughters. Becky would be their teacher.
Becky had never met a baronet and imagined the fine clothesand manners that Sir Pitt Crawley would have. The carriage droveto Sir Pitt's house on Great Gaunt Street in London. The door wasopened by a very rough, dirty, bald, old man who carried Becky'sbaggage into the house. Becky was surprised that a baronet wouldemploy such a servant. She was even more surprised when shediscovered that this bald old man was not a servant but Sir Pitthimself!
There were other surprises. Sir Pitt Crawley was a very meanman who hated to spend money. He ate cheap food that hecooked himself. His grammar and spelling were very bad. Sheheard him say, "him and his family has been cheating me." Shesaw him write, "I leaf tomorrow morning erly." None of thisseemed to worry him, however.
That night, she slept in the bed where the first Lady Crawleyhad died. She had to share it with Mrs. Tinker, an old cleaningwoman, who awakened her at four o'clock the next morning. Itwas time to go to the Crawley country estate.
Sir Pitt, Mrs. Tinker, and Becky traveled on a public coach ofwhich Sir Pitt was part owner. It rained, but Sir Pitt would notlet Becky sit inside the coach. She had to sit with the driver andwas soon very wet and cold.
At Mudbury, a village about four miles from the estate, theygot off the public coach and used a carriage and four horses todrive the rest of the way. A long avenue lined with trees led tothe house. Sir Pitt told Becky how much timber was in the treesand what it was worth. He complained about some of the farmerswho worked on his farms and about his brother Bute who ownedthe next estate. He and his brother were always fighting.P8-P10
