A dream ofa hydrogen economy

1 Switching from fossil fuelsto hydrogen could dramati-cally reduce urban air pol-lution,lower dependence onoil and reduce the buitd-upof greenhouse gases thatthreaten to trigger severeclimate change. With thoseperceived benefits in view,the US,the EuropeanUnion,Japan and othercountries have sunk bil-lions of government dollarsinto hydrogen initiativesaimed at revving up thetechnology and propellingit to market.
2 Car and energy compa-nies are pumping billionsmore into building demon-stration fleets and hydro-gen fuelling stations. Theonly problem is that the beton the hydrogen economy isat best a long shot.Recentreports from the US Nation-al Academy of Sciences andthe American Physical Soci-ety conclude thatresearchers face huge chal-lenges.The transition to ahydrogen economy,if itcomes at all,will not hap-pen soon.
3 Top of the list of difficulties is finding a simple andeconomical way to producehydrogen. Today,by far thecheapest way to producehydrogen is by using steamand catalysts to break downnatural gas into H2 andCO2.But 15 per cent of theenergy in natural gas is lostas waste heat during the re-forming process.Theupshot,according to PeteDevlin,who runs a hydro-gen production programmeat the US Department ofEnergy,is that it costs ＄5 toproduce the amount ofhydrogen that releases asmuch energy as a gallon ofgasoline.
4 In addition to strippinghydrogen from fossil fuels,DOE and other fundingagencies are backing inno-vative research ideas to pro-duce hydrogen with algae,use sunlight and catalyststo split water moleculesdirectly and siphon hydro-gen from agricultural wasteand other types of 'bio-mass'.Years of research inall these areas,however,have yet to yield decisiveprogress.
