《高職公共英語教程》是根據教育部頒布的《高職高專教育英語課程教學基本要求（試行）》的精神及《教育部關於以就業為導向、深化高等職業教育改革的若干意見》中所提出的“高等職業教育應以服務為宗旨，以就業為導向，走產學研結合的發展道路編寫的。其特點有三：聽說領先、重視基礎、強調實用。改革開放以來，我國大學生的英語水平特別是閱讀水平有了明顯提高，但聽說能力一直是薄弱環節。為了彌補這一不足，本教程將聽說擺在了每課的重要位置。高職學生不同于本科生，與本科生在入學水平及求職方向上也有明顯差別。高職教學強調理論夠用為度、動手能力及應用能力為主。本教程的編寫充分體現了這一精神，其中第3冊內容全部是應用文，這也是本教程全新的嘗試。
