臍橙性喜地中海型氣候，主要產區在美國加州、澳洲、西班牙、南非及中國等國家；台灣在1910年日據時代引進栽培，引進初期由「日本杉原產業株式會社」選定在台東縣成功鎮設立農場進行試作，但因臍橙樹勢較弱、開花量雖多但不耐逆境，生理落果嚴重，故品質雖然優異，但產量低使果農栽培意願降低，因此並未大量推廣。台灣目前臍橙栽培面積僅百餘公頃，以台東縣成功鎮栽培最多，約60公頃，每年會辦理臍橙節活動，其他如南投水里鄉、台中東勢鎮亦有部份栽培。在市場供不應求下，價格高，台灣目前品種除華盛頓臍橙，日本系之「白柳臍橙」及「吉田臍橙」均有不錯之表現。
