Part I. Definition of a research paper
A research paper is a common form of academic writing. It requires writers to explore a certain topic, conduct research, take a position and provide support for that topic. Generally, a research paper can be either a term paper, a thesis, a dissertation or a published journal article. In this textbook, the research paper particularly refers to a scholarly article published in an academic journal. As an academic work, a research paper published by an academic journal contains original research and undergoes a process of peer review before they can be accepted for publication.
