▌Preface

To me, poetry is a life-long hobby. My interest in poetry started when I was in high school and has continued ever since. However, it was not until late 1980s that I started to translate poems. Often, in a carefree mood during my leisure time, whenever I came across with a poem that inspired me, I would make an effort to translate it from its source language into a target language. This exercise of associating images in two different languages with the utmost degree of verisimilitude excited me and the joys derived from pursuing such a task were beyond words to describe.
In earlier years of my retirement, the joys of translation enriched my ability to compose poems in both Chinese and English. Vivid scenes gliding through the vicissitudes of life that touched my heart, the epiphany arising from cherished images through personal feelings, and a new, subtle change of diverse outlooks towards my retirement years – all would go far to justify the motivation to write a new poem. As a result, a vast number of unpublished poems, original or translated, was worked out with the aid of a long-time devotion to poetry.
In recent years, I spent time editing some of those readable poems and organized them by categories into a collection of 176 poems and lyrics selected and included in a book, entitled “The Epiphany of a Carefree Mind-An Anthology of Poems and Lyrics in Chinese and/ or in English.”
The core contents of this book, as suggested by its title, epitomize the intellectual activities of a life-long hobby.
I wish to dedicate this book to my uncle in appreciation of the time and efforts he spent bringing me up and to my wife for celebrating our 50th anniversary.

(Appendix)

● A Song of Golden Anniversary

This life, regrettably short as time fleets,
is so full of the effects of aging
that even if youth won’t return again,
our life together is as sweet as honey.
Under the same roof, we have our life spent
together for fifty years. You’ve taken on house work
day and night, enduring its toil and moil
without complaints, as if taking on the whole
weight of caring for husband and children.
Your pulpy, jade-like complexion appears
haggard, and your hair turned gray, obvious
in the mirror. Behind each drop of your toil
there’re thousand bushels of love. Through hardship
together, we become friends too close to be
apart. In the same way, I adore you now
as I did before and the deep-sworn vow
is as firm as afore. In my heart, you’re
my only lover. This lasting fate grows
profuse like the main of ocean on Earth.

● Shuĭ-lóng yín Sū Shì

Catkins seemed like as much of flowers as of non-flowers
Are wafting casually, to no one’s taste,
Across the roadside, away from their roots,
And yet couldn’t help pondering
In deep thoughts with no feelings.
Her sorrows beleaguered like weeping willows
And her sleepy, lovely eyes, like willow leaves,
Barely open before closed,
She follows the wind in a dream to reach
Her lover thousands of miles away,
Only to be awakened by oriels’ twittering.
Nothing should be sorry for the blown-away flowers,
Except those fallen and scattered in the Western Garden.
When the dawn peeks and the rain has stopped,
How could one trace the tracks of their remains?
Upon a closer look, shrunk catkins in a pool of springtime
Filled mainly with dust and partly with flowing water,
Do not appear like specks, rather the tears of a parting partner.

● Epitaph on an Army of Mercenaries —A.E. Houseman1 (1859-1936)

These, in the day when heaven was falling,
The hour when earth’s foundations fled,
Followed their mercenary calling
And took their wages and are dead.
Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
They stood, and earth’s foundations stay;
What God abandoned, these defended,
And saved the sum of things for pay.

他們頂天立地;
他們之屹立使地基保存;
