Simply Learning, Simply Best!

Unit 5 Mermaids
 Images of surpassing beauty and strong determination will flash into one’s mind when mermaids are mentioned. They are mysterious marine figures taking the form of a female human above the waist and the tail of a fish below. Mermaids are rich in symbolism in all kinds of depictions about them. In fact, when reading British folklore, you will be surprised to find that they have been deemed as unlucky omens.

Although mermaids have been linked to bring disasters, tragic death, and terrible misfortunes, they do get praised for granting people’s wishes. Among the fascinating legendary works, Hans Anderson’s fairy tale, The Little Mermaid, published in 1873, enjoys the greatest popularity. In the tale, the Mermaid bravely
pursues her true love at the cost of her life. Though she fails eventually and ends up dissolving into foam, the tragic yet romantic love story has greatly touched and inspired readers worldwide. In 1913, a statue of the Little Mermaid was set up in Copenhagen, Denmark. Till today, countless fans go to visit her and admire her persistence in seeking eternal love and at the same time, lament over her tragic doom.
