When the oxygen contained in the blood passing to the kidneys is low, or thenumber of red blood cells decreases,the kidneys produce and release erythropoietin orEPO--a hormone that stimulates unipotent stem cells to produce more red blood cells.
This process is called erythropoiesis.

When we consider blood,we're faced with an organ whose marvelous complexity ismatched only by its functional simplicity. Blood performs two major functions. The firstis transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide, food molecules, ions, waste, hormones andheat to every cell in our body. The second is defending the body against infections and.other foreign material. Blood is the only organ in the body that is a fluid. Erythrocytes,or red blood cells, comprise about 40～ of the blood's volume. They containhemoglobin--a protein that gives blood its characteristic red color and enables it to carryoxygen from the lungs and deliver it to all body tissues.
Blood serves as a highly effective delivery and disposal system for the body. Toremain a vital organ, blood needs to be maintained and replenished. One way is byhaving wastes removed at regular intervals. The kidneys filter waste materials fromblood and produce urine. These functions are performed by nephrons which aremicroscopic units within the kidneys. Each bean-shaped kidney contains about onemillion nephrons. The components of a nephron include a thin-walled, bowl-shapestructure called Bowman's capsule and within that a glomerulus which is a tuft ofcapillaries. In addition to their filtration responsibilities, the kidneys monitor the bloodto ensure sufficient oxygen reaches every cell in the body. When the oxygen content ofthe blood passing through the kidneys is low,or the number of red blood cells decreases,the kidneys produce and release erythropoietin or EPO--a hormone that stimulatesunipotent stem cells to produce more red blood cells. This process is callederythropoiesis.
