“The lesson was above my head.” 「

He will be back in a couple of days.

He aimed at the bird.
不懂這個片語,你要怎麼跟別人形容他瞄準的動作呢?「He… held up his gun… looked at the bird… the gun and the bird, straight line…

5. No Cell Phone Distraction
No Cell Phone Distraction
Not too long ago, being present and engaged without distraction 1 throughout meetings or gatherings with your family, friends or colleagues was the courteous and respectful way to behave. Unfortunately, thanks to the advanced technology and more and more people owning a cell phone today, people can be very rude due to 2 too much cell phone distraction during a gathering with friends or a lunch with colleagues.
Without doubt 3, in some circumstances of emergency, accepting a call is allowed, but calling friends to gossip or catching up with someone you haven’t spoken to for a period of time on your cellphone is in poor taste.
First of all, you need to realize that talking on the phone during lunch with someone else is quite disrespectful. If you need to answer a call during the meal, do apologize in advance 4 and explain why you need to take the call. Most importantly of all, don’t forget to make the conversation on the cell phone short and to-the-point. Apart from keeping your cell phone conversation quiet, turning off your cell phone is always a polite thing to do. Voicemail exists for a sensible purpose. Your friends don’t have all the time to wait as you talk on the phone.
Playing online games on your cell phone in front of others during meals is even worse. Your behavior simply implies that spending time with them bores the pants off you 5. On the surface, they might show tolerance towards you 6, but as a matter of fact, such low-class behavior can only exhaust everyone’s patience 7 with you.
What if you are having lunch with people who feel compelled to use the cell phone all the time 8? Create a “no phone” policy and ask everyone to obey the rule 9. Turn off all phones at the beginning of a meal, or remove all the phones from the table so that all the phones are invisible. If anyone’s phone is ringing, don’t be shy to ask them to let it go to the voicemail. If your lunch date takes the phone call, wait an appropriate amount of time, as the call may be important.
Once you find that the conversation over the phone is simply gossiping and it’s obviously not going to end soon, get up from the table and gesture that you are going to leave. Leave a note that you want to reschedule. You don’t need to get tough with 10 them, but you should let them understand that your time is valuable.

1. without distraction
1. It is difficult to watch the movie without distraction when someone is talking on the phone beside me.
2. Don’t bring your cell phone into the meeting room, so that you can be engaged in the meeting without distraction.
這一段在比較not too long ago(不久之前)以及today(今日)兩種不同的情況。

2. due to 因為
1. The flight was delayed due to the storm.
2. His absence from the meeting was due to his illness.

3. without doubt
doubt指「懷疑、不確定」,without doubt即「無疑地、確實地」之意,也可以說成without a doubt。與beyond doubt、beyond any doubt、no doubt等片語是一樣的意思。
例句:
1. This is without doubt the greatest novel she’s ever written.
2. It was without doubt the largest earthquake on record.

4. in advance
1. Let me know in advance if you can’t come to the party.
2. If you want to meet Mr. Larry, you need to make an appointment in advance.

5. bore the pants off sb.
bore指「使人感到無聊」,bore the pants off sb.

1. Mr. Lawson’s opening speech bored the pants off me.
2. He couldn’t help dozing off because the plot of the movie bored the pants off him.

Beyond doubt (無庸置疑地), sandwiches are by far one of the most attractive (吸引人的)food to many people nowadays. Sandwiches in all its forms are most popular with (受到歡迎)world-wide eaters of all ages. Simply taking a big bite of a simple sandwich with bacon, lettuce and tomato can make many people beam with joy
If you are a sandwich eater, you may sometimes be curious about(好奇) when and how the first sandwich was made. Well, the word “sandwich” for an item of food has originated over two hundred years ago. It was possibly named after John Montague, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich in 1762. Montague, an English nobleman as well as a hardened gambler, usually gambled for hours. One day, Montague, as usual (一如往常地), was playing a marathon gambling game with his friends. Although he was hungry, he was too busy with (因某事而忙碌)the game and refused to get up for a meal. He then asked the cook to get him something to eat that wouldn’t interrupt the game. At the request of (在某人的要求之下)Montague, the cook put a slice of (一片) roasted beef between two pieces of bread, which allowed Montague, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, to eat a good meal with one hand and still be able to (能夠)play the card (玩牌)with the other.
A great many (許多的) people who are not expert in (專精於) culinary skills find it a piece of cake(極為簡單) to make a sandwich by themselves (靠自己). You can make any flavor of sandwiches as you please, such as beef sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, tuna sandwiches, or seafood sandwiches. Moreover, there are also sandwiches that are fit for (適合) a vegetarian or someone who is on a diet (在減肥中), namely cheese sandwiches, vegetable sandwiches or even
fruit sandwiches.
A sandwich is quick and easy. Whenever you are in no mood for (沒有心情做某事) cooking, try making a sandwich for yourself. You will be satisfied with (對某事感到滿意)what you eat. And whenever you are too busy to eat a slow meal, try dining at a restaurant (在餐廳吃飯) which is famous for (因某事物而有名) their sandwiches. A sandwich is always the most convenient for (對某人來說很便利)a busy person.
