1.Organization of the text: Draw Ss attention to Exercise 1, Text Analysis to see how many parts the text can be divided into.Then ask Ss to give the main idea of each part.T may divide Ss into two large groups.Members of one group scan the beginning sentences of the paragraphs to find how many time slots there are in the text.They may make a list of all the time words and phrases.Members of the other group scan the text to mark out all the conversations that took place between Professor Agassiz and Scudder.Afterwards by comparing notes they will see that in each time siot except for the last one there is an important conversation.Thereforethey would know how to divide the essay into five parts.
2.In Text A, the author narrates in detail the lesson he learned under Professor Agassiz.It can be seen that all the events in the text are arranged in chronological order.Basically, chronological order presents events according to the time in which they occurred.This type oforganization is especially effective if you are describing a process, relaying a series of actions, or telling a story.
3.Note also that in Text A, comparison and contrast are used to show Scudders changing moods in the course of learning his lesson.Ask Ss to come up with two or three words to describe how Scudder felt at each stage of observation.For example, they may say Scudder was bored and indespair on the first morning.By this exercise they will see that, along with a chronological development of events, comparison and contrast also play a part in achieving effectiveness.
