Foaming Problem and Solution of Amine
Inhibitor in Field Applications
Abstract: Field applications have shown that amine inhibitor agents have some degree of foaming ability,which can affect the performance of the drilling fluid. Common antifoaming agents are not very efficient in thissystem, so its application is limited. The study presented in this paper investigated the effect of the amineagent on the viscosity and density of the drilling fluid. The results showed that the agent affected the perform-ance of the drilling fluid greatly, and the foam that formed could not be eliminated completely by increasing thecirculation. Then, a series of screening experiments was conducted for six different antifoaming agents. Theresults showed that the Span80 agent was the best de-foaming candidate when added into the drilling fluid withthe amine agent. Even when more than 5. 0~ of the amine agent was added, the volume of formed foam in si-tu remained small. This method was recommended for use in many wells in the Linpan block, and the resultshave shown that this method is very efficient and practical.

Amine-based drilling fluid can reduce the hydrated dispersion substantially, partiallybreak the hydration structure inter-clays, improve the spatial structure, reduce inner fric-tion, and maintain good theological properties, thus enhancing the wellbore stability andcleaning function. Although it has excellent performance, some problems exist during itsapplication, the biggest of which is the foaming problem; once the amine agent is added tothe pit, after several circulations, many tiny specks of foam appear in the drilling fluid,which change its properties and cause the density to fluctuate slightly.Traditionally,ammonium salt or amine salt has been used to enhance the performance of drilling fluids. Inthe past several years, many other methods have been tested, but these systems have had avariety of limitations, such as the inhibition of shale rock hydration and the lubrication ofdrilling fluids. The development of amine chemistry basically represents the development ofshale inhibitor and high-performance water-based drilling fluids. The shale inhibitor used inhigh-performance water-based drilling fluids is a kind of amine-based multi-functional mole-cule that can dissolve in water and yields lower toxicity.
