“Then you have lost one quarter of your life,” said the wise man.
“Do you know history? ”
“No, sir,” answered the boatman.
“Then you have lost half of your life,” said the wise man.
“Do you know philosophy? ” said the wise man.
“I don't know that either, ” said the boatman.
“Then you have lost three quarters of your life.”
Just then a sudden gust of wind overturned the boat.
“Do you know how to swim?” asked the boatman.
“No, ” replied the wise man.
“Well then,” replied the boatman, “you have lost your whole life.”
Task 2 Speaking Practice
Find a partner, read the following model conversation first and then talk about the movie and the movie star you like best.
Model Conversation
Mike: What do you usually do on weekends, Emily?
Emily: I often go out to a movie with my family and friends. What about you?
Mike: I like staying at home and watching movies online with my beers, popcorns, something like that. I can just relax at home and it's a lot more comfortable.
Emily: What kind of movies do you like?
Mike. I'm crazy about action movies and horror movies.
Emily: I don't really like them, as a matter of fact. They are too scary and violent. I enjoy love stories and musicals.
Mike. Really? To be honest, I can't stand them. They often make me drowsy. I think they are boring.
Emily: Who is your favorite actor, then?
Task 3 Cloze
Read the following passage and choose an appropriate word to fill in each blank.
Have you ever seen the 1933 movie King Kong? It is one of the most memorable examples of early experiments with special effects. King Kong himself was an animated model, brought to life on( 1 )using stop- motion filming. It is a very labor-intensive method: Models have to be moved a fraction (少許) of an inch, their facial( 2 )changed, and then shot, with 24 different shots being taken for just one second of film.
King Kong's costar in the movie was the actress Fay Wray. If Kong was an animated( 3 ), how did the early filmmakers make it look as though he was interacting with an actress? The answer lies in a technique known( 4 )“optical printing” (光學印片). The producers filmed Kong and Fay Wray separately. They then projected the two films together and used another camera to( 5 )the information on a third reel of film. The result: On film, it looks as though Fay Wray is right there with Kong. The separate( 6 )-animation, scenery, and human characters-were merged to appear as though they all existedtogether during filming. The scene appears real. This blending of( 7 )is now known as compositing (合成). It's still done today, but using different methods.
These days, instead of a jerky King Kong, you'll see humans walking with authentic-looking dinosaurs in a lush forest. The old technique of optical printing has been( 8 )with digital (數字化) compositing.
One important tool in digital compositing is the“blue screen”. Movie stars( 9 )a scene in a studio,in front of a blue screen. Later, computer programs are used to replace the blue background with a real background, such as an ocean( 10 ). So, even though the actor was filmed in a studio, it will look like he was filmed out at sea.
