布魯斯，一直是任何一種爵士樂的重要組成部分，而且它成功地保持了自身獨立的存在。可以說如果沒有布魯斯就不可能有今天的搖滾樂。布魯斯的“憂郁（藍色）”特色產生的原因是將音階中的“mi”音及“si”音降了半音。
銅管樂隊和拉格泰姆（Ragtime）：19世紀80年代后期，在美國絕大多數南部城市內，都一出現了黑人銅管樂隊、舞曲樂隊及音樂會樂隊。與此同時，美國北部的黑人音樂傾向于歐陸風格。在該時期，拉格泰姆開始形成。雖然拉格泰姆主要是在鋼琴上彈奏，但是一些樂隊也開始演奏它。拉格泰姆的黃金時代大約是在1898年到1908年，但它的時間跨度實際上很大，影響綿延不絕。
相比其他音樂，爵士樂自身有很多獨特之處：1）即興演奏或者是演唱；2）運用布魯斯音階；3）爵士樂節奏的極其復雜性；4）獨有的爵士和弦；5）獨特的音色運用。

Aim
This section aims to encourage students to speak out and exchange their ideas about music.The oral activities are designed to help students develop argument and form more rational and systematic thinking by giving more reasons,evidence,and examples.
Teaching steps
1. Ask students to discuss and exchange information concerning music knowledge.
2. Organize the opinions about the functions of music.
3. Representatives are chosen to report to the whole class.
