Loud music.Relationship problems.Too much to do.Not enough time. The excitementof a new relationship.Financial worries.Stress! You can't get away from it: there's no placeto hide.Seemingly, stress is an inevitable part of modern life.Whether it seems frightening orinvigorating,we all experience its effect.
Often, stress is insidious, and we don't even notice things that affect us.As we sleep, itencroaches on our psyche through noise or incessant worries over things that need to be done. While we work at the computer, stress may interfere in the form of noise from next door, strainon our eyes, and tension in our backs. The exact toll stress exacts from us during a lifetime ofstress overload is unknown, but it is much more than an annoyance.Rather,it is a significanthealth hazard that can rob the body of needed nutrients, damage the cardiovascular system, raise blood pressure, and dampen the immune system's defenses, leaving us vulnerable toinfections and a host of diseases. In addition,it can drain our emotional reserves, contribute todepression, anxiety, and irritability, and cause social interactions to be punctuated with hostilityand anger.Stress is a major concern in the United States, and it appears to be getting worse:One-third of U.S.workers report an increase in job-related stress over the past year.Althoughmuch has been written about stress,we are only beginning to understand the multifacetednature of the stress response and its tremendous potential for harm or benefit.
Often,we think of stress as an externally imposed factor that threatens or makes a demandon our minds and bodies. But for most of us,stress usually results from an internal state ofemotional tension that occurs in response to the various demands of living. Most currentdefinitions state that stress is the mental and physical response of our bodies to the changesand challenges in our lives.Inherent in these definitions is the idea that we sometimes takeourselves and our lives too seriously: that we should loosen up,worry less, and gain greatercontrol over our minds as well as our bodies.
A stressor is any physical, social,or psychological event or condition that causes thebody to adjust to a specific situation.Stressors may be tangible, such as an angry parent ora disgruntled roommate,or intangible, such as the mixed emotions associated with meetingyour significant other's parents for the first time.Adjustment is the attempt to cope with a givensituation.Strain is the wear and tear the body and mind sustain during the adjustment process.
Stress and strain are associated with most daily activities.Generally, positive stress,or stressthat presents the opportunity for personal growth and satisfaction,is called eustress.Gettingmarried, stating school, beginning a career, developing new friendships, and learning a newphysical skill all give rise to eustress.Distress,or negative stress,is caused by those events thatresult in strain, called debilitative stress.Examples include financial problems, the death of aloved one, academic difficulties, and the breakup of a relationship.
