Mitosis essentially is an orderly series of steps by which theDNA in the nucleus of the cell is equally distributed to twodaughter,or identical,nuclei.During the process,the nuclearmaterial is distributed to each of the two new nuclei.This isfollowed by the division of the cytoplasm into twoapproximately equal parts through the formation of a newmembrane between the two nuclei.
All cells do not reproduce at the same rate.Blood formingcells in the bone marrow,cells of the skin,and cells of theintestinal tract reproduce continuously.Muscle cells onlyreproduce every few years.
Tissues
Multicellular organisms are composed of many differenttypes of cells.Each of these cells performs a special function.These millions of cells are grouped according to their similarityin shape,size,structure,intercellular materials and function.Cells so grouped are called tissues.There are four main types oftissue:epithelium,connective and supporting tissues,muscletissue and nerve tissue.
Epithelium
Epithelium consists of groups of cells closely joined together.Epithelial cells cover the exterior of the body and line theinterior body surfaces that communicate with the outside,suchas the gastrointestinal tract,urinary tract and vagina.Epithelium forms glands such as the thyroid and pancreas andalso makes up the functional cells (often called parenchymalcells or parenchyma) of organs that have excretory of secretoryfunctions,such as the liver and the kidneys.The individualcells may be flat and platelike (squamous cells),cube-shaped(cuboidal cells),and tall and narrow (columnar cells).Manycolumnar epithelial cells have become specialized to absorb orsecrete,and some contain hairlike processes called cilia.Epithelial cells may be arranged in a single layer (simple epithelium)or may be several layers thick (stratified epithelium).
