This painstaking survey was completed as a PhD dissertation by Baker 75 years ago, in 1937, and has been completely updated and expanded by two conservators of the screens, Ann Ballantyne and Pauline Plummer. The history of East Anglia during the period surveyed; local popular saints and their cults; the layout, construction, and use of rood screens; iconography of the painting; and details on the origins of motifs are the topics of Baker's work. Additional material by Ballantyne and Plummer includes additional information on these topics as well as new material on the painting techniques and materials, earlier, often destructive conservation measures, and present conservation techniques. Heavily illustrated with color plates of the rood screens, the volume contains several appendices with a gazetteer of churches, list of donors, and list of images on the screens.
