She thought to herself,"He looked sd strange!Strange glasses, too,And.why did‘he talk through the napkin?Perhaps heinjured his mouth as well."
Later, when she came to clear away the lunch from the table,She found her guest sitting in a Corner of‘the room smoking apipe,The lower part of the man's face was Covered with a cloth.which was draped over the pipe that snick out of his mouth.

"Yes,they do,"he answered, but he would say no more.
Trying to dig for more information from her guest concerninghis bandages, she said,"It can take a long time to get be en Mysister's son cut himself with a scythe, and it took three monthsto heal,So because of his accident,I don't like scythes now,"
"I can understand that,"replied the stranger.
"It was so bad,"she continued,"that we thought he wouldneed an operation,We,had,to put clean bandages on him everyday?'She emphasized the word"bandages"as she spoke.
Seemingly no longer interested in the direction that theconversation was headed, the stranger asked,"Could you getme some matches? My pipe has gone out."
She thought he was rude for brushing her aside,一but then shethought of the much—needed money he brought to the hotel,Shewanted to ask him more questions about his appearance butheld her tongue and got.the、matches as he requested.
