This volume is published in conjunction with a dazzling 2011 exhibition organized at the Gagosian Gallery, New York--a special exhibition featuring six pivotal paintings by the Russian pioneer of abstract art, Kazimir Malevich (1878-1935). Works in the exhibition representing his impact on American art are by artists Carl Andre, Alexander Calder, John Baldessari, Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, Ed Ruscha, Barnett Newman, David Smith, and Frank Stella, among others. The oversize format (11.25x11.25") affords generous display of the art. Supporting the visual presentation are essays on the American legacy, suprematism, and Malevich's availability, as well as reprints of a 1974 Art in America essay by Donald Judd, interviews with Mel Bochner and James Turell about Malevich, and a chronology and exhibition history. The authors are Aleksandra Shatskikh, a leading authority on the Russian avant-garde; Yve-Alain Bois (art history, Princeton U.); and Magdalena Dabrowski (special consultant to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY).
