In this fascinating study, Merriam (Bard College) describes the meaning and use of a common 17th-century art form, the garland flower painting, many of which include devotional images of the Virgin and Child, or the Eucharist. Central to the paintings' symbolism, she argues, are Counter-Reformation ideas and practices, which forcefully asserted the miracle of the Eucharist, among other Catholic beliefs, in the face of Protestant ideas. Using writings on sacred images by the Jesuit Cardinal and art patron Federico Borromeo, as well as other writings, Merriam describes the origins and symbolism of a large selection of paintings by Jan Brueghel, Daniel Seghers, and Jan Davidsz. de Heem, with many other artists cited for comparison.
