Astrology, the world' s oldest theory of personality, is almost universally rejected by scientists. For example, two hundred leading American and European saentists recently collaborated on a book, Objections to Astrology, in which they pointed out that astrology is based on magical thinking-such as that Mars is red, like blood, so people born under the "sign2" of Mars are aggressrve3. But some people still believe in astrology-or half-believe.
Astrology claims that there are basically twelve different human types, and that finding out the astrological4 sign of a person allows one to describe and explain that person. "Claire is an Aquarius5. She acts that way because she is an Aquarius."It even-attempts to predict what a person will do.
Astrology began in the Near East more than five thousand years ago. Ancient peoples charted6 the course of the planets, the stars, and our sun and moon. They noticed that some very important events in their lives-for example, annual floods and changing seasons-were marked by changes in the patterns of the heavenly bodies7. Some early astronomers8 thought: "The heavens seem to control the weather and the crops-surely they also control human lives!"
In astrology "the heavens" are divided into twelve "houses," each controlled by a particular constellation9. The fate and acts of each human being are controlled by how the stars were arranged at the moment of that person's birth. Since fate is deternuned at the moment of birth, a good astrologer10 should be able to predict the exact course of any person' s life.Astrologers try to make up a precise map of "the heavens" as they were on the exact day and hour of the person's birth. This is called a horoscope11, which means "map of the hour."
DO ASTROLOGERS REALLY USE ASTROLOGY?
When an astrologer makes up a horoscope for a person, does the astrologer stick strictly to business? Does the astrologer pay attention only to the matching of birth hour with the positions of "the stars," or do other things make a difference12? In other words, do astrologers really practice astrology, or do other factors influence the predictions they make?
Two researchers selected eighteen astrologers who advertised that they do horoscopes by mail. The psychologists13 wrote letters to the astrologers that were supposedly14 coming from a couple who were thinking about getting married and were asking for advice about whether to marry or not. All of the letters gave the same information about the birth hour of each person. Hal.f of the letters added a sentence noting that the couple had been having a lot of arguments. The other half of the letters added a line stating that the couple really enjoyed being together and got along very well. So half the letters were negative and half were positive in their tone.Whether the astrologer got a positive or negative letter was determined by flipping15 a coin.
