商品簡介
Beckensall, a longtime student of prehistoric rock art in Britain, takes the reader on a search for the many different types, particularly those with small hollows or "cups" cut into them. He states what is known about this art, but his main goal is to refute theorists who look at the rocks and weave detailed but groundless meanings for them. At the present, he states, there is no way to know what the artists intended. He also makes a case for leaving the rocks where they are, rather than removing them to a museum for protection. Their positioning in the landscape may well be essential to their purpose. There are many color plates of the rocks and modern art inspired by them. The book is also concerned with the cataloguing of the rock art and there are suggestions for this and for setting up a website to document them. Beckensall's clear prose and no-nonsense approach to the subject are a refreshing corrective to the many books of mystical and unfounded interpretations of prehistoric artefacts.
