商品簡介

This book presents a complete and annotated English translation of the text Diary of a Boat Trip to Wu (Wuchuan lu), a travel journal written by the famous Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279) government official and writer Fan Chengda (1126–1193). The journal describes a boat journey the author made in the summer and fall of 1177 from Chengdu (Sichuan) to his home near Suzhou (Jiangsu). Fan's trip covered a distance of approximately 1,700 English miles and took 122 days to complete. The Diary of a Boat Trip to Wu is especially valuable because it provides detailed, first-hand descriptions of many aspects of the Song dynasty (960–1279) geography, history, literature, art, and religion. Perhaps most noteworthy are the author's lengthy and often fascinating accounts and assessments of scenic and historic sites he stopped to visit during the trip.

James Hargett's translation of Fan Chengda's travel diary is must reading for any student of Song literati culture. His prodigiously annotated translation lets us journey down the River with a sociable fellow traveler, who likes to take side trips to famous sites. Many places remind Fan of a poem by Du Fu, Su Shi, Huang Tingjian, or Li Bo, which he shares with us. Because Hargett translates place names that he thinks carried meaning, we gain deeper appreciation of the marking and labeling of the landscape. Fan felt a need to learn the local names—Plank Bridge Rapids, Snow Mountains, Frog Chin Hill, Query-the-Moon Hall, Foot-Washing Stream—and to connect them to places.

There are no finer eyewitness accounts to life along the Yangtze River during the Southern Song dynasty than the two great “river diaries” by the poet-officials Fan Chengda and Lu You. And, one could not ask for a better scholarly guide than Prof. James Hargett. He has spent decades studying Fan Chengda's life and writings and has now produced the definitive translation of his Diary of a Boat-Trip to Wu. It faithfully transmits the writer's spirit of inexhaustible curiosity about the landscape and its people, bringing these perspectives into closer focus for modern readers with an abundance of additional information. Perusing the diary is like unrolling a painted scroll filled with realistic detail that captures Imperial China during one of its most vibrant eras. It is an especially valuable and poignant record at this moment in time as the river undergoes what may be the most profound change in all its history.
