Although Strong Girls, Strong Women, follows the paths of eight girls who remain friends from elementary school until their seventieth decade. The message conveyed by this memoir is applicable to women and men. The women who are chronicled in this book experience the joy of being in elementary school in the the fifties and the horror of the race riots of the sixties. The book reviews the aspects of the era in which the "girls" were raised, These past times included skating, movies, dark basement parties, amusement parks, and shows in which they competed-all of which contributed to well rounded adults.
The book also addresses the the not so pretty aspects of life, such as unwed pregnancy, challenges of racism and discrimination. It makes a strong case that these can be overcome with other counterinfluences that surround young people. The eight girls referenced in the book became strong, resilient, successful women in cities throughout the country. They continue their elementary school bond in their senior years. The book is a manifesto for the principal that with the right influences and surroundings, one can overcome just about anything. Additionally, you are only as old as you think you are. A strong base of skills can sustain women and men well into their senior years.
