Anna Hathaway Mandler, a poet, wife and mother, born on the enchanted Gull Island, is blessed by the ancients with the gift of second sight. Not only can Anna see ghost and shades, but she also has the mystical ability to see through the veils that separate the two worlds of heaven and earth, and of life and death. It is between these veils of twilight mist, that Anna, when she is two years old, meets her guardian spirit, Rainbow Crow.
After her beloved Aunt Ida, who had raised her, dies, Anna meets and falls in love with Nicolas, a pragmatic accountant. Nic does not believe in any of the "mumbo jumbo superstitions," of the island. Eventually, he thinks that the voices and ghosts that Anna sees and hears are only hallucinations, figments of her wild imagination. In an attempt to salvage her marriage, Anna attempts to become, "normal," denying her gifts, burying them with the legends and enchantments from her great Aunt Ida under a pile of old wool sweaters in her bedroom closet.
But now, Anna's journey back to reclaim her gifts from the ancestors begins.
After a near drowning accident, Anna's only son slips into a coma. She hears him crying to her from a hospital room miles away. Anna believes he is trapped in the twilight mist, caught between life and death, like a moth between two panes of glass. To bring Jimmy home, she must travel through those veils separating the two worlds.
But will her gifts from the island's ancestors and the love of her guardian spirit, Rainbow Crow, be strong enough to save her son?
