This book introduces concepts of Space and Place from various disciplines. Beginning with how the concepts have been addressed over history, the most important philosophical and physical theories concerning Space are illustrated as well as Time, with which Space is often associated. Both concepts are sources of adjectives such as ‘absolute’ and ‘relative’ - terms which have come to permeate everyday speech and cultural science discourses.
Space and Place are often defined in an overly theoretical and opaque manner and this book argues that the concepts be viewed as analytical categories rather than objects while showing how historical spatial analyses can be conceived and conducted. The case studies presented in the book are primarily from the fields of urban history, the history of trade and global history including the history of cartography, but its analysis is equally relevant to other realms.
