The book, Nanoparticles in Polymer Systems for Biomedical Applications, presents many of the recent technological and research accomplishments in the area of nanomedicine and nanotechnology. It includes presentations of state of art in the field along with novel approaches in nanomedicine and nanotechnology, and new challenges and opportunities. Also discussed are the different types of nanomedicinal drugs with their production and commercial significance. Other topics discussed are the use of natural and synthetic nanoparticles for the production of drugs, different types of nanoparticles systems, drug carriers, wound healing antimicrobial activity, effects of natural materials in nanomedicine, and toxicity of nanoparticles.

This new information presented in this volume helps to keep those in this field up to date on the key findings, observations, and fabrication of drugs related to nanomedicine and nanotechnology. With chapters written by prominent researchers from academe, industry, and government and private research laboratories across the world, the book will prove to be a valuable resource.

作者簡介

Jince Thomas is currently working as a Senior Research Fellow at the International and Inter University Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala, India. His research focuses on polymer blends, polymer nanocomposites, conductive and insulating polymer composites and biomaterials. He has two master’s degrees (MTech in Polymer Science and Technology and MSc in Chemistry). He also worked at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, USA. He has authored three book chapters.

Professor (Dr.) Sabu Thomas is the Pro Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University and Founding Director of the International and Inter University Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala, India. He is also a full professor of polymer science and engineering at the School of Chemical Sciences of the same university. He is a fellow of many professional bodies. Professor Thomas has (co-)authored many papers in international peer-reviewed journals in the area of polymer science and nanotechnology. He has organized several international conferences. Professor Thomas’s research group has specialized in many areas of polymers, which includes polymer blends, fiber-filled polymer composites, particulate-filled polymer composites and their morphological characterization, ageing and degradation, pervaporation phenomena, sorption and diffusion, interpenetrating polymer systems, recyclability and reuse of waste plastics and rubbers, elastomeric crosslinking, dual porous nanocomposite scaffolds for tissue engineering, etc. Professor Thomas’s research group has extensive exchange programs with different industries and research and academic institutions all over the world and is performing world-class collaborative research in various fields. Professor Thomas’s Center is equipped with various sophisticated instruments and has established state-of-the-art experimental facilities, which cater to the needs of researchers within the country and abroad.


He has more than 700 publications, with citation count of 31190. The H index of Prof. Thomas is 81, and he has six patents to his credit. Prof. Thomas has edited 73 books. He is a reviewer for many international journals. He has received MRSI, CRSI, nanotech medals for his outstanding work in nanotechnology. Recently Prof. Thomas has been conferred an Honoris Causa, DSc by the University of South Brittany, France, and University Lorraine, Nancy, France.


Dr. Nandakumar Kalarikkal
is an Associate Professor at the School of Pure and Applied Physics and Joint Director of the International and Inter University Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala, India. His research activities involve applications of nanostructured materials, laser plasma, phase transitions, etc. He is the recipient of research fellowships and associateships from prestigious government organizations such as the Department of Science and Technology and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research of the Government of India. He has active collaboration with national and international scientific institutions in India, South Africa, Slovenia, Canada, France, Germany, Malaysia, Australia, and US. He has more than 130 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He has also co-edited nine books of scientific interest and co-authored many book chapters.

Jiya Jose, PhD, is a postdoctoral researcher at the International and Inter University Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, India. Prior to that, he was a senior research fellow at the National Institute of Oceanography and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi, India. He has co-authored over 20 scientific articles published in international journals and has co-edited chapters in seven books. He has participated at many professional conferences and workshops. He was awarded a Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) from CSIR-HRDG, Government of India and was a recipient of the Prestigious UGC–Dr. S. Kothari Post Doctoral Fellowship. Dr. Jose acts as a reviewer for the journal Nano-Structures & Nano-Objects. He holds a PhD in Marine Sciences from the Cochin University of Science and Technology, National Institute of Oceanography, Cochin, India.
