George C. Foulke served two years as the second chargé d'affaires of the American legation to Korea shortly after the "Hermit Kingdom" began to open to the outside world in the 1880s. In this volume, Hawley (practical English, Yonsei U., South Korea) collects the letters sent by Foulke to his family while he was "America's man in Korea." The letters offer a window into the early relations between the US and Korea and include Foulke's often critical thoughts on American policy in Asia and his observations on the complexities of Korean politics.
