Current literature and public debate shows very little consideration of how gentrification has reformulated gender roles. This book argues that gentrification has served to reinforce many traditional gender roles and make the city a more difficult place to live, especially for working class and racialized women and racialized men. In increasing the cost of living in cities, gentrification has served to narrow choices, not expand them, doing so in a way that traps many women at the low end of the wage ladder, limits housing choices, makes social reproduction even more expensive and limits the scope of the democratic process. This has resulted in the displacement of many of the phenomena once considered to be the emancipatory hallmarks of gentrification, such as gayborhoods.
This book engages the gentrification literature and the literature on the gendered effects of urban policy in order to account for the role of gentrification in the larger social processes through which gender is continually reconstituted. In so doing, it makes clear that the negative effects of gentrification are far more wide-ranging than popularly understood, and make recommendations for renewed activism and policy that places gender at its core.
