Much like a map which embodies the Western conception of measured space, a hula performance embodies Kanaka Hawai’i's perception of an intimate interaction with the natural world. It expresses what is sensually experienced, put to symbolic movement and elevated by the rhythmic sounds of musical accompaniments and floating scents of floral adornments. It is an integrative presentation of experienced space providing a deeper layer of knowing and relating to the world. Louis hopes that describing Kanaka Hawai’i’s cartography encourages other indigenous peoples to recognize and embrace their own cartographic traditions so they can expand the current understandings and representations of the world.
