Conceptualising Integration in ClIL and Multilingual Education

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is a form of education that draws on earlier models of bilingual education such as immersion and content-based instruction. This volume highlights the complexity of integration in particular, and shows that apart from content and language matters, institutional, pedagogical and personal factors also need to be considered. Existing CLIL research has largely been concerned with learning outcomes or classroom practices. This book focuses on integration and how it can be conceptualised and investigated, using different theoretical and methodological styles ranging from socio-constructivist learning theories to systemic functional and genre approaches. Contributors include subject-specific and general educators who have combined forces to explore integration as a truly multidimensional phenomenon.

Tarja Nikula is Professor at the Centre for Applied Language Studies, University of Jyvaskyla, Finland. Her research interests include CLIL, classroom discourse, language education policies, pragmatics of language learning and use, ideologies in language education and translanguaging.

Emma Dafouz is Associate Professor in the Department of English Language and Linguistics at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain. Her research interests include English-medium instruction, language policies, higher education and classroom discourse.

Pat Moore is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Philology and Translation at the Universidad Pablo de Olavide, Spain. Her research interests include bilingualism, translanguaging, bilingual education and classroom praxis.

Ute Smit is Associate Professor in the Department of English Studies at the University of Vienna, Austria. Her research interests include English-medium instruction, English as a lingua franca, language policy and classroom discourse.
