The similarities between the United States and South Africa with respect to race, power, oppression and economic inequities are striking, and a better understanding of these parallels can provide educational gains for students and educators in both countries. The South Africa Initiative (SAI) is an interdisciplinary program that bridges cultures, connects educators and provides learners from South Africa and the United States with opportunities to exchange cultural information through collaborations and ongoing discourse. This volume presents scholarly work from this initiative to advance educational practice, social justice and transformative learning through shared experiences and perspectives.
This volume explores individual and systemic barriers that continue to support social inequality through a global lens. It provides a comprehensive framework for developing transformational learning experiences in support of social justice, and a deeper understanding of the factors influencing identity at different levels.

Saundra Tomlinson-Clarke is Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers-The State University of New Jersey, NJ, USA.
