Throughout its long history Russia, regardless of its governance, has sought to control its and others' perceptions about itself, sometimes in ways that are opaque to the very others it seeks to influence. Trepanier (political science, Saginaw Valley State U.) works his way from 988 AD to 2005, evaluating the symbols of church and state from the days of Kievan Rus to Putin's new Russia. He uses the theories of Voegelin to unearth the reasoning behind the Muscovite nation's isolation, the combination of Orthodoxy and autocracy and the resulting disorder in justice, the rise of the secular state and the retreat of the Church just before the revolution, the assumption of the state of the role of messiah up to 1991, and the struggles for order and justice revealed by the symbols of the new order, both theoretical and political.
