Baumgold (political science, U. of Oregon) presents six essays exploring the place of social contract theory in the thought of Hobbes, Grotius, and Locke. A major theme of the essays, inspired by John Rawl's admission that his contract theory builds within the horizon of modern constitutional democracy, is the ancien regime as the horizon of these earlier thinkers. In the case of Hobbes and Locke, this is addressed in relation to how they deployed their contract theory in order to address whether and when it is permissible to resist a legitimate ruler. Other topics include the appeal to history in Hobbes' The Elements of Law, voluntarist and nonvoluntarist dimensions of contract thinking in Hobbes, and the process of composition of the key works of Hobbes and its implications for interpretation.
