The History of Michigan Law

Twelve essays by academics and practitioners examine key themes and events that determined the evolution of Michigan law. The volume opens with a discussion of the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 and Michigan's territorial heritage. Other topics include (for example) temperance and prohibition in the antebellum era; conservation and environmental law; and the Michigan Women's Commission's role in the struggle against sexism in the 1970s. The final essay looks at the process of lawyer training in the state. Finkelman teaches at Albany Law School, and Hershock teaches history at the U. of Michigan-Dearborn. Martin Hershock is an associate professor of history at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. He is author of The Paradox of Progress: Economic Change, Individual Enterprise and Political Culture in Michigan, 1837-1878 (Ohio, 2003) Paul Finkelman is Chapman Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Tulsa College of Law. He is the author of many articles and books, including His Soul Goes Marching On: Responses to John Brown and the Harpers Ferry Raid and the Library of Congress Civil War Desk Reference.
