商品簡介
Originating from a Chinese studies symposium (U. of California, Berkeley, 1994), 13 contributors lead by Ln (Columbia U.) and Perry (Harvard U.) explore the danwei hierarchy of state-owned workplace units in Chinese cities. The system confers such economic, political, and social perks, that a 3:1 urban-to-rural ratio prevailed by Mao's demise. Until recently, one could not freely transfer to another unit or travel without the approval of one's work unit. Although sociologists (e.g. Whyte and Parish) have studied this system so central to Chinese workers' lives, questions remain that are addressed here: on the origins of danwei , its unique functions, and how the institution is faring under contemporary reforms.
