The Politics of Insecurity ― Fear, Migration and Asylum in the EU

Huysmans (politics and international studies, the Open U., UK) argues that situating the question of migration within the framework of security studies implies a particular way of arranging social and political arrangements that helps sustain fear of refugees and policies of exclusion. In this work, he explores a number of questions arising from this central realization. Over the course of eight chapters he presents a Foucauldian understanding of security framing as a technique of government, considers how the existential modalities of security framing help shape political community, considers the European integration process within the context of the securitization of migration, explores the relationship between security and freedom within the context of Europe's internal security project, and places the questions of migration and asylum within the context of the more general political debate over the formation and contestation of political community in the European Union.
