Adler (classics, Middlebury college) argues that Vergil's epic Aeneid is primarily a response to the Lucretius' championing of political and philosophical Epicureanism in his poem De Rerum Natura . He argues that Vergil accepted the Epicurean belief that humans existed without gods, but viewed the propagation of the belief as dangerous to human society. Aeneas, then, represents Vergil's representation of the highest happiness available to most men, a happiness rooted in an ignorance of the nature of things.
