The University of the West Indies at Cave Hill commissioned the history to mark the 50th anniversary of its teaching and research presence in Barbados. After demarcating the space, Marshall begins with the first European settlements during the 1620s. Subsequent stages are the pervasiveness of small properties in the century before emancipation, from small properties to village communities: emancipation in the core space, inside The Mount and Free Hill before the coming of the university, and making space for a university campus.
